Capoeira Angola Quintal and Afro Brazil Arts are hosting A Night in
Bahia, Brazil at Opus 22, to benefit the Afro Brazil Arts Capoeira
Leadership School Program where NYC youth learn leadership
through capoeira! Capoeira is an acrobatic martial art developed by
African slaves in Brazil. The game of capoeira is played to traditional
music of the berimbau, pandeiro, and atabaque. Capoeira Angola
Quintal teaches and performs capoeira and other Brazilian dances,
since 1988. Michael Goldstein, also known as Mestre Ombrinho, is
the founder and Executive Director of Afro Brazil Arts and Capoeira
Angola Quintal. Mestre Ombrinho is the first North American Capoeira
Master with over 25 years experience practicing capoeira in Brazil,
the US, Europe, and Israel.
Third Thursdays is a benefit for Afro Brazil Arts, a non-profit arts
education organization, inspiring achievement, leadership, and
community through capoeira workshops and performances. Founded
in 1991, Afro Brazil Arts works in schools throughout the New York
Area creating cultural arts programming accessible for people of all
ages, abilities, and backgrounds. Afro Brazil Arts has presented with
World Music Institute, The Guggenheim Museum, City Center and
Alvin Ailey.
