EPIC – Eric Prydz In Concert – Review – Nicholas Chapman
Eric Prydz is a name that will be familiar to many in and out of the dance music community. His tunes like “Call on Me†and “Pjanoo†have been staples on Ministry of Sound “Best of†compilations and music video programs alike. Pryda, Moo, Sheridan or Cirez D might be less familiar but they’re all pseudonyms for the same man: Swedish production master and label owner Eric Prydz. Whatever you might know him as his popularity is insurmountable, which was more than evident at the sell out debut of his live show at Brixton Academy on the weekend. I’ve only ever owned work by Prydz under his Cirez D moniker but was intrigued to find out what all the fuss was about and see how it lived up to the marketing preceding the event……..
On assuming position back upstairs I realized that it was in fact the man of the moment taking his place on stage. I was hoping that the star of the show might have a little more to differentiate him from any other DJ you might see at a gig. Prydz was stuck on the end of a table laden with DJ gear, but the unimaginative booth and his lack of equipment left me feeling a little wanting………
All in all Prydz put on a good show. On/Off was a highlight for me and he delivered dance floor belters with good humour and energy. The sound was decent as well which can sometimes be a problem in venues not specifically built for this sort of music. Perhaps it was all the hype that was released in the lead up to the gig that left me feeling a bit disappointed, perhaps I’m just getting to be a bit of an old man, but personally I’d take quality tunes over fireworks any night of the week.
