    Free Souls, Free Spirits…

The energy of ALMA’s audience fill their venues with more intensity than their trademark thunderous “neo-Brasilian fusion” beats. Resident DJ True (“Deeper Than Disco” WHCR 90.3fm) and Miller Cruz (Bembe) continue to deliver new sounds from their native Brazil and beyond. With guests like DJ Ray Velasquez, Maracatu NY,
    House of Rhumba
, and NY Capoeira, their party has grown to become a local favorite now even attracting guests from out of town.

All of this as they prepare for their biggest ALMA revelry yet. Two of its founders, Joann Jimenez and Miller Cruz will be celebrating their birthdays. Joann, the shoo-in favorite of the founding trio, started ALMA after her success as co-founder of “The Melting Pot NYC”. Her events showcase artists of every ethnicity in fun, non-judgmental environments that audiences can’t get enough of. She’s known for assembling the most eclectic groups of music lovers to dance under one roof since the better days of NYC and is one of the greatest energy sources behind ALMA.

And what would ALMA be without Miller’s stellar peak time selections. The Mineiro born percussionist originally hooked up with True at his resident weekly “Suite Samba” party at Tapis Rouge. Miller has played percussion seriously from the age of 13, learning from the phenomenal street musicians of Uberlandia. He moved to NYC in 1995 and started frequenting underground dance parties, where he fell in love with the soulful NYC House sound and started fusing it with his Brazilian roots.

For this very special event, the best possible guest DJ has been called for an extremely rare surprise performance. Since the early 90’s, there has been the emergence of a new sound in dance music, one that places more emphasis on Latin, Brazilian and African jazz elements than straight 4/4 beats. This global dance movement can, in many ways, all be traced back to this one man, perhaps the most significant figure to arrive on the NYC soulful dance scene since the Masters at Work. His works are extremely ambitious, from successfully reinterpreting a masterpiece by Milton Nascimento and composing authentic Brazilian originals to remix work for Cesaria Evora, he always fuses live instrumentation into his bottom heavy tracks, to create a seriously organic rhythm.

They welcome one and all to celebrate the birth of these 2 beautiful spirits into our physical world. You don’t have to know any of them, or anyone for that matter, when you are familiar with their Soul, a new yet very old Soul… ALMA.
