After yet another incredible New Year’s Eve celebration, we’re all
ecstatic we don’t have to wait long for the next ALMA party. But
nothing could add to the excitement more than the variety of veteran
jocks they bring to their “neo-Brasilian fusion†brand, many of which
would not have the opportunity to play such a beloved genre but
have lifetime collections just waiting for such an opportunity.
Enter Robert “Bobbito” Garcia also known as Kool Bob Love and
formerly known as Bobbito The Barber, Make It Happen, Boogie Bob,
DJ Cucumberslice, Soul Food Bob, and Bag of Tricks, y’all know who
this is! The Puerto Rican DJ, writer, entrepreneur, streetball player,
sneakerfreak, breakdancer has been killing it for years on too many
levels. For starters, from 1990 to 1998 he co-hosted The Stretch
Armstrong and Bobbito Show on WKCR. It featured demos and in-
studio freestyles from many then-unsigned artists such as Nas, Jay
Z, Big Pun, Wu-Tang and Mobb Deep. Bobbito set up Fondle ‘Em
Records in 1995 as an outlet for other guests such as MF DOOM, Kool
Keith and Cage. In 1998 The Source named The Stretch Armstrong
and Bobbito Show “Best Hip Hop Radio Show of All Time”. He has
opened up concerts for Eddie Palmieri, Tony Allen, Joe Bataan, Roy
Hargrove, Roy Ayers, and D’Angelo just too name a few.
His passion for music only scratches the surfaces of his endless
talents. He is the Editor In Chief of Bounce: From the Playground b-
ball magazine, an accomplished Vibe magazine music columnist, and
the critically acclaimed author of “Where’d You Get Those? NYC’s
Sneaker Culture 1960-1987†(Testify Books). He is a basketball
performer at NBA halftime shows (Dallas Mavericks, NY Knicks) and
on TV commercials (Nike, NBA on TNT), who self-produced a
dribbling instructional DVD (Bobbito’s Basics to Boogie). In 2006,
Madison Square Garden Network (MSG-TV) hired Bobbito to do the
“Hot Minute At The Half” celebrity interviews and became the first
Latino broadcast member in the 60-year history of the franchise. In
2007, Bobbito worked with Nike on limited edition Nike Air Force 1
and Air Force 25 models and designed the “Project Playground”
limited edition of Adidas Superstar. He is the announcer for EA
Sports’ “NBA Street†video game and for ESPN 2’s “It’s the Shoesâ€
series. Wait, not done yet, he is a feature film actor (“Prison Songâ€,
“Summer of Samâ€) and music consultant (“25th Hourâ€, “Sneaker
Heads”). And for fun, he dances with the world-renowned Rock
Steady Crew. Phew.
Now, in 2008, he starts his year flexing his extensive knowledge of
all things boogie by bringing it a la Brazil, while DJs True and Miller
Cruz continue to crush alongside their classic cool cohorts Joann
Jimenez and Manchildblack. Definitely one of those editions you don’t
want to hear about after the fact.
