Even when you don’t recognize the name offhand, you know the
caliber of DJs and musicians presented at ALMA’s Brazilian monthly
are worth checking. Irfan of ‘Balanco’ and ‘Rainy City’ fame is one of
those cats you most definitely want to check. Serious about his Loft,
House, Brazilian, and all things “grooveâ€, for 6 years his Brazilian
weekly and label ‘Balanco’ in Manchester has introduced the world
over to the most soulful sounds of Brazil. Brazilian music enthusiasts
and “lofters†alike won’t want to miss this rare pairing with resident
DJs True and Miller Cruz.
This advent record collector and label owner learned how to program
beats hanging with ‘A Guy Called Gerald’ back in the days in his
home of Manchester. He was resident of both ‘ The Music Box
‘ (named after and influenced by Ron Hardy) and ‘ City People’ which
paid homage to Dave Mancuso’s Loft. Nowadays he programs events
permanently at club Ponana hosting guests like Gilles Peterson, Joe
Claussell, DJ Spinna, Bobbito and most recently Questlove from ‘The
Roots ‘ just to name a few.
He also has a monthly called ‘Beleza’ at a Brazilian club named
Guanabara in London. Irfan has opened for Angie Stone, Jair
Oliveira, Airto, Azymuth, Omar, Tony Allen, Sharon Jones and
Anitbalas amongst many others. His remix projects include the likes
of Blaze, Roland Clark, Bah Samba and Tony Allen. Irfan’s production
moniker for Brazilian music ‘Galera Da Cidade’ proved very
successful as an exclusive Japan only release. He regularly plays a
selection of Nu soul, Hip Hop, Broken Beat, House, Rare Groove,
Jazz, Afrobeat, Funk and Boogie at his latest residency, The Soul
Tree, reinforcing his musical diversity and hunger for what he calls
“groove†music
Expect a sure fire “dance ‘til it hurts†soundtrack for those that like
their beats a little harder and their dance floors a little stickier,
accompanied by NYC finest Brazilian musicians. The soul of NYC’s
underground meets the soul of Brazil; ALMA hosted by Joann Jimenez
and Manchildblack.
