The unseasonably warm temperatures
kept
steadily rising as 2004 came to an end. It was as if the natural
affability of ALMA’s crew had even won over Mother Nature. New
Year revelers in all white began to gather at the entrance to The
Sullivan Room as if it were the shores of Copacabana Beach. The
anticipation was great and ALMA delivered with drummers
thundering in the New Year unplugged. It was made clear to
everyone in attendance why these events have attracted the likes of
Danny Krivit, Louie Vega, Francois K, Todd Terry, and countless
other notables of the underground Dance scene. It’s the music! All
for the love of, that is.ALMA has created a sound of their own, and they call it “Neo-
Brasilian Fusionâ€. It incorporates samba, pagode, soulful house,
drum n’bass, mangue beat, bossa nova and the many other
influences of Brazilian DJ’s True and Miller Cruz. What stands out
the most about their playing is their freedom to experiment and
change BPMs. The ever changing rhythms make for a very
entertaining soundtrack even for those that aren’t as serious about
their movement as the sweat drenched, baby powder carrying
regulars that fill their venues.DJ Tommy Bones (Wave
Music / King Street) is respectably one of those regulars that are just
as serious about dancing as he is about DJing. It is no wonder why
he was called to be the first guest DJ of 2005 for he is the designer
of the very popular “Got Soul?†t-shirt for Body&SOUL. Don’t expect
him to be slouch in the Brazilian department either, Tommy has
been an enthusiast for many, many years and will be accompanied
by Capoeira Angola
Palmares. Combined with their resident percussionist Kako
and
his “Afro-
Brazilian Coalition†ensemble, ALMA has grown to be a monthly not
to be missed.Friday, January 14th, 2005
