Nervous Records and Rob Promotions present
ASSETERIA! Mixed By Tom Stephan
Out October 7, 2008
Asseteria – the weekly party that’s brought raunchy fun to New
York’s after-hours scene since 2001 – is the theme of a new
compilation from classic New York label Nervous Records, and
international superstar DJ Tom Stephan (aka Superchumbo).
ASSETERIA! Mixed By Tom Stephan will be released digitally on
Nervous Records, and in stores on October 7, 2008.
The Sunday night/Monday morning party, which won the “Best Partyâ€
title at the Club World Awards for three consecutive years, is growing
an international reputation for its bodacious dancers, tribal rhythms,
towering drag host Anthony Lamont, and full-tilt production – which
frequently includes a giant ass cut-out spewing smoke. A long list of
international DJs have brought their best high-energy sets to the
Asseteria crowd, including Danny Tenaglia, Behrouz, and ASSETERIA!
compilation mixer Tom Stephan.
“I always dig out all of my latest ‘ass’ tracks when preparing for a
night at Asseteria, so I started joking to [Asseteria promoter] Rob
Fernandez & [Nervous rep] Kevin Williams that we should do a
compilation of just those tracks,†says Stephan. “When it actually
came down to the track listing, we thought that might just be too
much ass for one night! So I’ve chosen a selection of booty shakin’
beats, and just a few of the juiciest ‘ass’ tracks.†DJ Vibe, Fierce
Ruling Diva, and Armand Pena are all featured on the single CD,
which closes with – what else – Avenue D’s definitive “You Love This
Ass.â€
But Stephan credits longtime Asseteria resident DJ Merritt with
developing the party’s signature, drum-heavy, tribalized sound, and
championing it throughout the years. “This should be his
compilation!†he says.
Stephan, a native of New York state, cut his teeth as a clubber in
early ‘90s NYC. But he got his DJ-ing start in London, as an opener
for Danny Tenaglia at Ministry Of Sound. That led to his own night,
Roach, at Turnmills; and a major career as a touring DJ. As a
producer, Stephan’s distinctively punchy and percussive sound has
pounded into clubs worldwide, in the form of tracks like “Irresistible,â€
“Dirtyfilthy,†and mega-hit “The Revolution.†He released original
album “Wowie Zowie,†and started his own record label,
ChumboMundo, in 2005.
“Asseteria really feels like a party. That’s important to me. It may
seem obvious, but I’ve been to a lot of clubs that feel more like hard
work than fun!†says Stephan. “Asseteria! You can’t take it too
seriously, can you?â€
About Tom Stephan..
After moving to London ten years ago to study film, he wanted to
recapture the vibe created by Junior Vasquez during his clubbing
days at NY’s Sound Factory. He released The Revolution under the
Superchumbo moniker last year, prompting a flood of remix offers,
including Missy Elliot, Kylie and Basement Jaxx. His remix of Yoko
Ono will be her next single and is due for release later this year; he’s
also worked the Superchumbo magic on Fierce Ruling Diva (The
Sound Factory classic was originally retouched by Moby) and it’s
Tom’s new mix that has stormed into Pete Tong’s cool cuts chart. And
old friends Xpress2 came straight to Tom for a remix of ‘Muzikizum’.
But don’t think Tom’s become a slave to the remix. With a production
rate that makes ants look lazy, he’s ready to unleash new track
‘Irresistible’ (available in September), a blistering twisted tune to
cement his position at the forefront of dance music. Hot on its heels
comes the Superchumbo artist album, due for release in September
on Loaded in the UK, and Twisted in the US.
The defining high of djing for Tom remains playing live. Weekends at
Tribal Sessions with an up for it crowd plastered in war paint and
feather head-dresses, or his own London nights, Roach at Turnmills
and Tank at certifiable gay club Crash, both launched this year, give
him the opportunity to play up to five hours of his inimitable brand of
twisted house. As Superchumbo is Portugese for “super- leadedâ€, his
fans have now taken to calling themselves Leadheads.
Tom Stephan’s transatlantic, twisted sound is an inimitable, seamless
blend of deep tribal and funky beats, a journey into the darker side
of dance music. He’s signed to the newly revived legendary Twisted
label in the States, and to Skint mother company Loaded in the
UK.
