BART B MORE, ADAM SHERIDANFor those in the know, Leeds’
Victoria Works will be the place to be each week throughout the transitional
season, with its strongest run of warehouse parties to date. The hangar-like, awesome in the true sense of the word, 3
roomed warehouse is a raw, spare, perfect rave den. Un-spoiled by chintzy decor
and fancy frills and instead housing a DJ stage, lasers, smoke machine and a
few scattered seats as well as a large bar and pin point sound system. All the venue needs, then, to come
alive and offer a pure and exciting experience akin to acid house parties of
the past, is a group of varied but equally wised up clubbers with a shared
interest in shape shifting (of the sort which have made previous parties with
the likes of Carl Cox, Deadmau5, Sasha & Digweed beautiful memories) and
some mouth watering electronica, so here goes…Sat 26th September
Rolling techno and piston
pumping house, white noise tinges and emotional breakdowns – these are the
sounds Dubfire has used to climb right to the top of the electronic ladder and
to slots alongside Sven Vath at his famous Cocoon night in Ibiza. His own label Sci-Tec sets a high
electronic standard, as does the second guest Jesse Rose. Known for having shaken up house with
his restless basslines and energetic stylings, he’s s at home at Panorama Bar
Berlin as he is Space Ibiza. As
well as loads more acts, London’s fidget/breaks crew Chew the Fat! host the
second arena.Sat 3rd October
We Love… roll into town
tonight, with a couple of headline acts who rule underground floors like Fabric
and Sankeys; make music which tops charts and set trends on labels like Get
Physical, BPitch and Mobilee, and who craft club sets which earn them critical
acclaim. Representing German duo
M.A.N.D.Y will be Patrick, who delves into the dark and wonky side of house and
techno: rough and ready, it will take your mind as well as your feet. Voorn is
an experienced hand who weaves melodies and synths into delicate patterns of
emotive music and is responsible for one of the mix CDs of the year after
jamming over 100 tracks into his 2 CD mix for Balance. There’s also Balearic, uplifting and
twisted house and more from Cagedbaby, Jonathon Ulysses, Serge Santiago and
more.Sat 10th October
Groove Armada take up the
stage with a full set up tonight, ready to blast out their tune-laden back
catalogue. Unbeatably fun and
dancefloor orientated, GA’s big room house and electro bumpers will add warmth
to an Autumnal eve, as will the more raucous sounds of the support they bring
with them… Doorly, Purrfect with Loose Cannons and more.Sat 17th October
Crazy Ibiza night
Circoloco hosts tonight, and is sure to bring some of that crazy spirit to
Leeds, along with a long line of current electronic champions. Timo Mass, Tania
Vulcano, Jamie Jones, Tato, Simon Baker, Clive Henry and more all feature. Between them they release some of the
scene’s best house and techno on labels like 2020 Vision, Crosstown Rebels,
Ostgut Ton, NRK, Azuli, Four: Twenty, and they rule floors like Fabric, Panorama
Bar, DC: 10, T Bar and just about anywhere else worth going in the world. For a journey into the depths of house,
and up to the highs of techno, there really is no better vehicle than this
party. It’s supported by Leeds
nights Back to Basics and Asylum and their underground residents.Sat 24th October
A ton of acts bring the
noise for this one in association with one of the country’s largest deebee
events, Metropolis, as d&b talents line up alongside dupstep heads and bass
hungry bad men…. Chase &
Status have blown up this year with their jump-up sounds, smashing b-lines and
sing along hooks, so are sure to destroy things tonight. Skream is a dubstep founder and is sure
to wonk things up with his trawl through the bottom end of the sonic spectrum,
and fellow stepper Rusko will crunch the beats and will keep that floor
bouncing. Scratch Perverts cut up
and smash together anything that will get you going, from breaks to house to acapellas and all the rest, and have done at institutions
like Fabric, for a long time.
Toddla T has a genre-defying readiness to mix bass sounds (ragga,
hip-hop, drum’n’bass, breaks) with house, electro and bleepy techno and is
another one of 2009’s success stories.
D&b mainstay, producer and label owner Andy C also gets in on the
act as do many more… check it out.Sat 7th November
This week gives you the
perfect opportunity to re-create the carefree times of an Ibiza summer as it’s
an Ibiza Warehouse Experience with Judgement Sundays and Digital Society your
hosts. And it’ll be a high energy
affair with trance stars and house and electro heroes like Matt Hardwick, Judge
Jules, Micky Slim, Oliver Lang, Juan Kidd, Hoxton Whores and more all slamming
out the beats to the fluoro drenched, hand waving mass in front of them. There’s also Metropolis
& Hospitality party with High Contrast DJ Hype and more on Saturday
November 21st as well as a Cream Christmas party with Crookers and
Laidback Luke on December 12th. Many other dates still to be
announced.With some nonstop nights of
music like that, you’re likely to be grateful for the more relaxed third room
and its rich colourful hues and draped curtains which will provide the perfect
nest to take 5 in. And, rightly
so, you’re also likely to flag up anyone who says ‘Warehouse Party’ without
mentioning Leeds, as someone who hasn’t got a clue…
