Dirty Canvas is London’s most exciting and forward thinking club night. They were the first club night that regularly showcased GRIME music and also regularly feature dubstep, hip hop, niche and anything with bass in it. From humble beginnings at Whitechapel Art Gallery, via the Institute of Contemporary arts they are now one of the most established and respected club nights in London.
On Friday the 22nd of May Dirty Canvas celebrate their 4th birthday at Cargo with a free party under the arches. Hold on to your nuts because the line-up is fierce.
To call DJ EZ legendary is not an overstatement. Throughout his distinguished music career DJ EZ has been a massive inspiration for the Dubstep/Grime/Funky scenes of today both as a producer and a club and radio Dj. Curator of the seminal Pure Garage CD series, DJ EZ’s appearance at Dirty Canvas is one we await impatiently!
Joining the dots between the oldschool garage of DJ EZ and the contemporary sounds of today are Oneman and Brackles. Oneman has almost singlehandly re-invented old school garage – taking the art of djing to a new level – recontextualising 2 step garage into dubstep, grime, ‘wonky’ and beyond. He is still the only artist ever to appear on Mary Anne Hobb‘s BBC Radio 1 show without releasing a record, his djing is that good. Joining him on the decks is the new golden boy of dusbtep – Brackles. Fresh from officially remixing Kid Cudi’s ‘Day n Nite’ and gearing up to some heavyweight Planet Mu releases, Brackles’ ability on the decks are no less impressive. Expect a journey through the UK underground from two of the leaders of the new school.
Next up Dirty Canvas are proud to present two of the biggest names from the Funky scene. Undoubtedly the most exciting thing to have happened to music in the past year – Funky has taken over the airwaves of London’s pirate radio stations. Championed by the likes of Kode 9 and Geeneus, Roska is one of the scene’s most sounght after producers – and along with Rinse FM mainstay Scratcha – will be showcasing this new exciting sound.
Lava Unit comprises MCs Badness, Mz Bratt and Dizzle Kid. Off the success of her female orientated reply to Wiley’s ‘Wearing my rolex’ Mz Bratt has spent the last year touring with The Count and Sinden – she also features on their debut album released on Domino Records this autumn.LIVE : LAVA UNIT
