DJ Pierre.
DJ Pierre is one of the few producers who is not afraid to be innovative. DJ Pierre is the producer’s producer.
From the scorching Acid of ‘Phuture’, to the development of the recently influential ‘Wild Pitch sound’, Pierre’s groundbreaking ideas have been food for a myriad of other producers. From the Italians who copied the grand piano sounds of Phortune’s ‘String Free’ to Junior Vasquez, DJ Duke and London’s own X-Press 2 and Farley & Heller, all of whom have developed their own strains of ‘WildPitch’.
Of all the original key movers on the Chicago scene, perhaps only Steve ‘Silk’ Hurley and Frankie Knuckles have gone on to achieve greater recognition after their initial success, but where they became enveloped with the majors, Pierre has kept to the heart of the underground, developing the moods and textures of early Acid. Since his early ‘90’s renaissance, Pierre has built up a formidable catalogue of both productions and remixes, hitting Number 1 in the Billboard dance chart with Midi Rain’s ‘Shine’ and scoring underground hits with his remixes of ‘YoYo’ Honey, Pet Shop Boys and ‘Slo Moshun’ amongst others.
But DJ Pierre’s not just a tracks man, as his excellent productions with Cynthia. M and Lavette, and his co-writer credit on Juliet Roberts’ world-wide hit ‘I Want You’ testify.
Through Pierre’s trademark DJ style, which encompasses everything from early Chicago acid and Detroit Techno, to current garage and hard house continues to be much in demand all over the world, playing regularly in the UK, Germany, France and Italy as well as across the U.S. More recently he’s adopted a low profile to concentrate on his new R’n’B based label, Chilltown Records, and producing artist Honey Jones. Fired up by the success of ‘The Horn Song’ he launched his long-thought about house label DJP Records. “You know, I just can’t make commercial records, even if I try†says Pierre.
‘I don’t seem to be able to come up with that corny sound, so when I do make something that gets big, it takes me by surprise’.
