PROFILE: Citizen Kane – DJ – New York City
When he’s not Djing at APT or Table 50, you can find Dennis Kane aka Citizen Kane painting. On January 13, 2005, Kane begins a new night at NYC hot spot Cielo alongside ultra respected DJ veteran Harvey. This is the Citizen Kane story. Here’s some of what he had to say:
HOW DID YOU MEET DANNY KRIVIT?
I was working @ A1 (record store, NYC), right when Body & Soul began, Danny would always come in on Saturdays, he would listen to any record I played, regardless of genre, if it was good he would buy it. Open minded and curious are words I would still use to describe him…..
DEFINE HOUSE MUSIC FOR THOSE THAT DON’T KNOW?
Most four on the floor house is horrible. Dance music should by nature be very diverse and eclectic, I like the early Detroit/Chicago vibe. DFA and Rong are two very interesting contemporary labels. Once something becomes defined as a genre you are in serious trouble. It happens all the time and “house” is no exception.
HOW DOES HOUSE MUSIC INFLUENCE YOUR WORK?
. . . A great house track has both grace and desperation, it invites abandon, and signifies a realm of difference.
WHATS THE MOST COMMON MISTAKE MADE IN HOUSE MUSIC?
. . .lazy production, too much similitude, conservative parties, bad graphics, and on and on…..
CRYSTALLIZE YOUR CONTRIBUTION TO HOUSE MUSIC IN ONE SENTENCE.
He pried opened a window and let in some fresh air.
WHAT PROJECT ARE YOU WORKING ON THAT PEOPLE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT?
. . . An upcoming party @ Cielo – Adult Section, with special guest dj Harvey.
