Founded back in January of 2000, Gemma Records is the creation of three friends and music
disciples, Suges, Triplet, and Sigg Shore. The three had been in school, learning the ropes of
the music business. After being profoundly inspired by the competitiveness and entrepeneurial
spirit that permeated the school, they decided it was finally time to do something about the
sordid state of electronic music in their home town of Toronto, Canada.
The scene was at that point composed of a handful of “cliques”: – producer crews who were
also the most prominent DJs in the city. They made tracks with no concept of style or
composition, just “crowd pleasers” (disco loops, progressive/hard house “big build-up” tracks)
to ensure they would gain the popularity to be able to DJ abroad. The
Gemma kids decided that they were going to try to be the first label to
focus strictly on making “musical” dance and electronica in a city
primarily known for cold techno, devoid of soul. With Suges’ deep house vibes, Triplet’s broken breax experiments and
Sigg Shore’s….well, I don’t know….abstract grooves, the Gemma kids
had a bit of a problem on their hands. Triplet explains: “We had this
wicked talent pool on our hands. Even though we were creating within
different genres, I was convinced that people would see good music as
good music. We quickly found out that it wasn’t that simple”. The
buying public was used to record labels releasing an overall sound.
This was definitely not the case for Gemma. In an attempt to focus the
sound a bit more, without having to release through sub-labels, Gemma
Records added a deep jazzy house virtuoso to the roster named Martino.
To some extent, Gemma Records is considered a house music label. Good?
Bad? The jury is still out. A variety of different flavors create the
tapestry of theGemma sound. Artists as diverse as Suges, Martino,
Triplet, MKUltra2, PillGrim, Nonsense, Sigg Shore and a slew of DJs and
singers all combine to create the color, while always maintaining the
high level of musical quality in the products and events. The name “Gemma” comes from a character in the anime classic “Ninja
Scroll”. In the movie, Gemma is an immortal demon that just keeps
coming back again and again to cause damage. It was a perfect fit.Since the label’s first release, Suges Wrex Shop, Gemma has stayed true
to its origins. Global acclaim and feedback has reaffirmed that they
are innovating in the right direction. Dance music should be soulful
and emotive and should always be evolving and progressing. Gemma
Records plans to continue the mission they started, with plenty of new
releases on the way. Stay tuned!
