PROFILE: True – DJ – NYC/Brasil
BounceFM is proud to present DJ True, co-founder of NYC’s hottest Brasilian music fest ALMA and host of the Deeper than Disco Radio Show. Here’s some of what DJ True had to say:
TELL US ABOUT ALMA – WHEN WAS IT FOUNDED?
Ahhhhh, ALMA was created in the living room of Carmen Valentine, one of Joann Jimenez’s (co-founder) dearest friends. Miller Cruz (also co-founder) had played percussion with me at a Brazilian party back at Tapis Rouge, NYC. We were all just hanging out one day at his house and he started to play CDs on a CD mixer. This was at the end of January 2004.
GIVE US A SAMPLING OF THE TYPES OF RECORDS PEOPLE CAN EXPECT TO HEAR ON YOUR RADIO SHOW?
It’s way too broad but I like to believe it’s all soulful, usually percussive and very jazz-oriented. From Hip Hop to Drum n’Bass, I think I keep a pretty consistent style. When I was growing up DJs played specific styles not specific genres. That’s what I like to play.
LABELS: Compost, Om, MAW, Far Out, Svek, Acid Jazz, Giant Step, Cosmic Sounds London, Foundation, Nuphonic, Ubiquity, Rush Hour, Clairaudience, Spiritual Life, etc…
WHAT THE AVERAGE PROFILE OF A LISTENER TO YOUR SHOW?
There’s actually been a couple of (prison) guards that have been listening since my first overnight slot and wish I was still there, so it’s probably b/c of them. When I was a drug counselor, I once met a guy that said my show helped him get through his bid. Wow! Besides that, a lot of Jazz heads listen b/c I was first lined up w/ the Jazz programming on Wednesdays and of course they could appreciate the style.
FIRST RECORD YOU EVER BOUGHT
“One Nation Under the Groove†by Funkadelic was one of them b/c of the album art, I remember that.
DEFINE HOUSE MUSIC FOR THOSE THAT DON’T KNOW?
. . . First of all, House music is originally from NYC!!! The Warehouse wanted to get the NY sound in their club and looked to Larry Levan to bring it to them. Larry didn’t want to leave NY (thank God), and sent them Frankie Knuckles in his place. At the time, the term house music was already being coined b/c of the frequency of rent parties in the 70’s (The Loft was originally a rent party, fyi). House music was the more uptempo tracks that would get the party pumping and attract people to your party. Combine that with the ever-increasing gay community in Harlem (see “Paris is Burning†the movie) calling their crews “Houses†and bringing a very specific sound to their “ballsâ€, we always had our own definition of what House was long before we even heard about Chicago’s Warehouse.
WHEN WERE YOU FIRST INTRODUCED TO HOUSE MUSIC?
92 KTU,
WHERE DO YOU SEE OUR SCENE 10 YEARS FROM NOW?
. . . .I see our music unfortunately making it’s way out of the clubs and taking the route Jazz did. People forget that Jazz was once pop and people danced their butts off to it. I just hope it develops the same staying power as Jazz.
WHAT IS THE WORST MOVIE YOU’VE EVER SEEN?
Krush Groove
FAVORITE SMELL(S)
. . . Nag Champa.
