My name is William Redden. I have been DJing now for about a year but have been deeply in love with this music we call House for at least 10 years. I’ve studied House, I’ve gone back to it’s foundations and have discovered that this is the one music that can bring us together as a world people. You will find below a copy of a blog I did for my Myspace.com page. Enjoy (although it’s kind of long), then be sure to invite me as a friend on myspace. ( http://www.myspace.com/house_music_lives )

I currently am involved with an internet radio station http://www.definitivebeats.com. If any are interested in very good House Music that is both Audio AND Video streams, come by and check it out. Look for my post in the internet radio station forum for my current flyer. Ok on to the blog:

I get asked this from time to time. “First off…what “is” House?….and Secondly, why do you listen to it?”

So I decided to post my infrequent blog on music today and answer this question once and for all. See if you don’t agree because I think if you are honest, you will.

History: Grew up in West Texas and listened to a lot of the same stuff my friends listened too…except…While my friends were into Kiss, and Rush, and Aerosmith, et al. I also listened to stuff that my friends didn’t much care for, such as: The Sugarhill Gang, Grandmaster Flash (and the wheels of steel), Parlament, etc, etc…

As I continued to grow and mature I still found myself wandering into the “cutting edge” so to speak. i.e. When overseas in the Navy I found a cassette of African Drums and Chants that I listened to all the time because it had been “mixed” into a quasi dance beat. Guys on the ship used to laugh at me all the time. But I didn’t give a rip! I liked it and that’s all that mattered.

I’ve floated into and out of the ultra heavy metal stuff, like Pantera, Sepultura, etc…I’ve drifted in and out of the pop scene, like Fleetwood Mac, Whitney Houston (before she freaked out), and No Doubt. I’ve dabbled into the Rap and RnB Scene, with such flava’s as Nelly, Dre, and T.I. or Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, and such. I still love the Blues, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Buddy Guy, Bobby “Blue” Bland. I’ve even hit into some Country (go figure), mostly the gals Faith Hill, Reba McIntyre, and Shania Twain. And that stuff is all good, and I’m not putting “your” style of music down. It’s just that it misses one MAJOR mark.

What is that mark? Well I’ll tell you just keep reading! I still haven’t told you why I listen to House music (and it’s sub-genres of Trance, Techno, DnB, etc…) Well here is why and also about that Mark thing I was talking about. The Mark I was talking about is this…All of those other styles of music fail at this…They don’t bring us together as a people, people of the human race. I know that sounds wierd to you right now, but keep on reading this Blog and I’ll explain fully.

Imagine that you can zoom out into outerspace…That you have the ability to view the entire world at one time. Your vision is so good that you can see individual nationalities of people, you just can’t make out their faces. You see White People, Black People, Hispanic People, Asian People, Mixed Race People…etc.

Now also imagine that you can shift these different people around to the “style” of music that they listen to! You put Rockers in Canada! You put Hip Hoppers and RnB’ers in South America! You put Country Fans in Africa! You put Pop fans in China! And so forth.

    Now…look at what you’ve created!

Look at the Rockers! What is the nationality of the 90% of the rockers?…..White

Look at the Hip Hoppers and RnB’ers! What is the nationality of the 90% of the RnB’ers?….Black

Look at the Country Fans?………..Well?………… White again!

Look at the Pop Fans?……………………………………White again!

Doesn’t seem like we are bringing ourselves together much does it? Seems like “Self Segregation” to me!

Ok, so lets look at the Dance Scene! What do you see? Here is what I see…Is there a Majority of White people there, yes there is. The World is Majority White (or so they say…could be open for debate), but there are millions of other nationalities in the mix too! Think I’m wrong? Listen to this…

One of the Prime places for House music is on the island of Ibeza. Where is Ibeza? Spain, that’s where.

Detroit City a majority black city holds a House/Techno/Trance/Dance Festival every spring and holds it in Downtown Detriot! 1 MILLION people attend each year! Do you think the locals just leave for the week? No they don’t because Detriot is where Techno got it’s start!

Still not convinced that House Music brings people together? Lets play a game shall we? It will be called “Give the Music a 1 line description Game” (Can you tell I made this up?)

    Ok here we go…

Rock? Rock is Kill your Parents Music!

Rap? Rap is Kill your Homies Music (or pimp your girl music..if you like)

RnB? RnB is 1. *woman* – You done me wrong and I’m movin on!
    or &amp ;nbs p; &amp ;nbs p; 2. *man* – I’ve done you wrong but I want you back!

Country? Country is this…My wife done left me…My Kids hate my guts…The dog just bit me, so I’ll just sit here and drink until I puke!

Ok, now what about House music? You’ll be hard pressed to find a “negative” house song. House is about these things….Love, Peace, Party, Dance, Togetherness, Harmony.

    That’s house music!

And that’s why I listen to House Music! I’ve gotten to an age that I can’t be bothered with Negativity. I want positive things in my life. I believe that you will be in 5 years more like the things you surround yourself with today. And House Music does this! It brings, exudes, and reproduces Positivity!

I won’t have a Mega Corporation like Sony, or Geffen Records, or any of the Monster Radio Corps like Clear Channel telling me what I will like or not like.

Most people are sheep at heart. They don’t want to make their own decisions…They just follow what everyone else is doing. They will listen to the same music that their friends listen to…They’ll watch the same programs on TV, they’ll even vote for the same Candidate…All because some Media Mogul told them that “THIS IS THE HOTTEST THING GOING! FOLLOW ME…you sheep!”

    I think I’ll pass.

Take this challenge if you dare! Listen to House Music for 30 days and see if it doesn’t change your life! See if you don’t become more positive! See if you don’t start to see people of other nationalities differently. See if you don’t too decide that House Music is the Future! House Music is Alive and Well! House Music will continue to Thrive as long as there is Love in the world.

    W.
