This month BounceFM.Com goes behind the scenes to understand the legal aspects of dance music. In so doing, we present a profile of Atossa Kia, Attorney at Law. Atossa doesn’t just talk about the music, she IS about the music. Certified to practice law in both New York and Paris, Atossa serves as an entertainment attorney guiding clients through every facet of releasing a record including clearing an artist name, formalizing band arrangements, sample clearance, releases from 3rd parties (e.g. photographs used in cover art) and trademarks. Atossa brings to the table a multi-faceted understanding of the music industry: her background includes serving as in-house counsel at Sony Music. In addition, she also DJ’s, so when she’s not in the board room, conference room or court room, you can find her in the DJ booth. BounceFM.Com is proud to present Atossa Kia.
Here’s some of what she had to say:
WHAT SHOULD PEOPLE CONSIDER WHEN HIRING A LAWYER?
First, I would say, when choosing an entertainment lawyer, choose an ENTERTAINMENT LAWYER. Entertainment law is a very odd concept because it could be anything. It could be a tax lawyer who is doing Britney Spears’ taxes. When I say an entertainment lawyer, a real one, I mean someone who has experience in music, TV or films.
AT WHAT STAGE SHOULD THE LAWYER BECOME INVOLVED? MOST ARTISTS TEND NOT TO BE BUSINESS MINDED AND TEND TO INCLUDE THE ACCOUNTANT AND THE LAWYER WHEN THERE’S A PROBLEM.
Unfortunately, that’s 60 or 70% of the people. Especially now, its getting worse because of all the information that’s on the internet. Now for instance, you type in the name of a contract on Google, you find tons and tons of forms. And a lot of people think, “I have the form that answers exactly my question, I’m going to use it,†and they use it and sign the worst deal from themselves. They might have saved some lawyers fees but in the end, it’s not very good.
WHY TAKE A LAWYER?
It’s good to have someone who has the big picture. Are you sure you are going to see everything in the process?
WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE DJ?
I went to see one of my favorite DJ’s dZiHAN & KAMIEN, it was incredible. They mix a lot of percussion with . . . they have 2 different styles. One of them has more Middle Eastern influences, Brazilian groove. The other is more techno, electro. They are very complimentary. They were at Deep Space, I haven’t seen so many people dance with all their hearts with totally unknown tracks that you would have never known existed. Those guys are incredible.
FAVORITE RECORD?
Thriller. Anything Quincy Jones produces for me is gold.
WHAT TRENDS DO YOU SEE IN OUR INDUSTRY RIGHT NOW?
Video mixes.
