PROFILE: Monique Bingham – Musician – New York
Her name is Monique Bingham and she’s a house music diva. Her hits WE HAD A THING and PURE catapulted this sultry musician to the top of the house music food chain. Frankie Feliciano’s remix of her current single FLIGHT once again takes the club world and dance floor by storm. On the eve of her upcoming performance this Sunday, March 13, 2005 at 718 Sessions alongside DJ Danny Krivit, BounceFM.Com is proud to present and EXCLUSIVE interview with Monique Bingham. Here’s some of what she had to say:
YOU WERE FORMERLY AFFILIATED WITH ABSTRACT TRUTH. WHO WERE THE MEMBERS OF THE GROUP?
I thought I was presently affiliated with Abstract Truth! Did you hear something? . . . Right now we’re in the very early stages of an album project.
WHAT WERE SOME OF THE OTHER HITS YOU WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR? Well I wrote all of the lyrics to all of the songs I sang with the band. So whichever of those that could be called “hits†I supposed I’m partly responsible for all of them! With Abstract Truth: “Get another Planâ€, “Like Waterâ€, “We Had a Thing.†All came out on Francois K’s Wave label based in NY. On my own: “Pure†with Naked Music/US “Don’t You Love Me†with Sir Piers’ Curious label/UK, “Go-Getter†with Matthias Heilbronn on Papa records/UK. More recently “Flight†with Studio Apt./JP picked up by Kingstreet/US remixed by Frankie Feliciano.
WHO ARE SOME OF THE PRODUCERS YOU’VE COLLABORATE WITH DURING YOUR CAREER?
. . . Matthias Heilbronn and I did a record called Go-Getter last year on Papa Records. I love that tune and Matty’s whole approach to music is great. I’ve worked with UK DJ extraordinaire Sir Piers, that funky bastard. Just finished a record with Mr. Quentin “Epod†Harris set to come out by the conference on Shelter. . . .
WHAT CRITERIA DO YOU USE WHEN DECIDING WHICH PROJECTS TO LEND YOUR VOICE TO?
If I’ll be paid in cash or via wire transfer.
WHATS THE BEST THING ABOUT BEING A SINGER?
I don’t know why I’m insulted by being referred to as a singer but I am. If I never sang another note it would make no difference to me. I’m a musician.
HOW DOES MUSIC INFLUENCE YOUR WORK?
. . . I’m … motivated by envy and greed.
WHAT CLUBS DID YOU FREQUENT WHEN YOU FIRST JOINED THE SCENE?
I didn’t go really. I think people have the wrong idea about me. I started making “house music†by sheer accident. Mathias Heilbronn is really to blame. I need to call him.
WHERE DO YOU SEE OUR SCENE 10 YEARS FROM NOW?
. . . I can’t imagine what the scene will be like. I have a feeling it will still exist, because what house music gives people can’t be downloaded at home. It has to be experienced.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE COMING UP IN THE SCENE TODAY?
Go to medical school. As a business move, it’s not a great one if I may be blunt.
