Rulers Of The Deep aka DJ Meri and P Julm have crafted a promising
career with some exceptional deep house and techno, winning fans
such as Josh Wink, Roger Sanchez and Sandy Rivera, and releasing
on the likes of Ovum, Peppermint Jam, and NRK.
‘Untitled Secret’, signed to Manchester Underground Music (MUM), is
their new studio album. It continues their rich vein of deep, tech-
edged house but this time shows Meri and P Julm moving into
different areas, mining the underground for some more acidic
moments and showing they can craft big anthems with the best of
them.
‘Track Three’ is the energetic opener, giving way to ‘Perfect
Defamation’ featuring Gaz Evans, one of the current biggies from
their DJ set. ‘Cut Off’ sees ROTD in stripped down mode, letting the
rhythms and percussion build into a hypnotic groove. Title track,
‘Untitled Secret’, is an intricately layered piece of modern techno,
moving neatly into ‘Look At What Acid Does To People’, as funky as
anything from the Motor City in the past three decades.
‘Fettle’ adds depth to the collection, an atmospheric slice of bleepy
house with the most melodic, piano-filled moment of the 10 tracks.
‘Teleport’, meanwhile, is the tribal-influenced cut on the album, and a
return to the club-based workouts they excel in. ‘Look Inside’, with a
fine spoken word contribution from frequent collaborator, Pierre
Ravan, is so deep it should come with a canary. ‘Last Survivor 2009’
picks up the pace before the big closer, ‘Planet Drum’, the crossover
hit which suggests ROTD have the prowess to take them yet further
onto the global stage.
