Matthias Heilbronn feat. Monique Bingham
Go Getter
Papa Records
PAPA023 & PAPA023RX
Papa Records continue to add to their already
seamless repertoire as they welcome Matthias
Heilbronn and Monique Bingham for this stunning
release. This isn’t the first time this partnership has
delivered. It was Matthias, back in 1998, who created
a soulful house classic when he added that
dancefloor flava to Abstract Truth’s ‘We Had A Thing’,
and his Body & Soul Mix still sounds fresh these
days. Abstract Truth’s lead vocalist? Monique
Bingham. Now Matthias & Monique join forces for
‘Go Getter’ and make no mistake, the electrifying
results of these two collaborating once more is
nothing short of mind blowing.
Matthias has delivered three killer mixes of ‘Go
Getter’ and it’s being released across two 12″‘s. The
first 12″ features the Soulflower mix, an organic mix
of percussive beats under a bed of bubbling urban
bass flavours, gently dipping its toe in a tub of
nu-jazz tinged instrumentation, all hooked together
with Monique’s blissful voice and sassy lyrics. On
the flip is the Sensible House Mix delivers a more
four four flavour, burning with uber beats and funky
guitar undercurrents creating wonderful deep vibes
ripe for head nodders and shape makers alike. The
second part features Matty’s II Deep vocal and
instrumental mixes, fuelled with chunky afro
percussive rhythms, an acid tinged bass hook and
warm freestyle key licks.
A German native based in New York, Matthias
Heilbronn’s work as a producer, writer and DJ has
seen him steadily achieve international acclaim
throughout his illustrious career with his trademark
sophisticated blend of soulful, jazz-inflected deep
house, percussive Afro-Latin rhythms and infectious
progressive tribal beats. As a DJ he’s graced the
decks of world’s most premiere venues. Matthias’
musical journey began after he witnessed a magical
set from the legendary Larry Levan at the Paradise
Garage. Pretty soon he relocated to New York where
he took a job at Axis Studios, learning engineering,
programming and editing under the tutorage of his
mentor François K. He also became roommates
with seminal house icon Frankie Knuckles which
lead him on to work with Larry Levan and Tom
Moulton. He soon became one of New York’s most
in-demand editors and programmers, just as likely
to found working on songs by Michael
Jackson,Madonna, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey
and Cher as he would be working with an array of
the influential house music producers of the time
including Danny Tenaglia, Todd Terry, Tommy
Musto, C&C Music Factory and François K. In 1993,
Tommy Musto offered Matthias his first big break as
an artist when his Sub-Urban Records imprint
released Matty’s debut single ‘Give A Little More’
under the moniker Sensible House.
In 1994, Matthias teamed up with Mike Delgado and,
under the name Deep Zone Productions, the two
composed and produced some of the biggest
Garage cuts of the time including: Carolyn Harding ‘I
Am What I Am,’ Deep Zone feat. Ceybil Jeffries ‘It’s
Gonna Be Alright,’ Lift ‘Music Takes Me Higher’ and
Dangerous Minds ‘Live in Unity.’ Following on,
Matthias crafted II Deep Productions, producing and
remixing an array of essential house anthems. His
sophisticated style has seen him remix and produce
for some of dance music’s most influential labels,
including Wave Music, Chez Music, King
Street/Nitegrooves, Masters at Work, Motown and
Distance, crafting ingenious floor rockers for artists
as diverse as Anastacia, Everything But The Girl,
Finley Quaye, Moloko, James Ingram, Martha Wash,
Bootsy Collins and Tom Jones to name but a few.
His own productions continue to gain notoriety, such
as last years ‘Nature Boy’ and ‘That Girl’ (released
on King Street and Wave Music respectively). As the
beat goes on, 2004 sees the tireless and prolific
Matthias compiling and mixing the third installment
of Wave Music’s Deep and Sexy compilation series
with other forthcoming projects including a
Peppermint Jam mix compilation entitled
Destination NY, and of course working on his own
productions. He also has plans for two world-wide
DJ tours this year.
The incredible voice of Monique Bingham has
reached great acclaim worldwide, touching many
souls with her ability to crossover genres and blend
them in perfect harmony. A born and bred New
Yorker with a deep respect and passion for the
traditions of jazz, Monique’s charismatic vocals
reflect the numerous influences into her own distinct
style. A sublimely talented lyricist and composer,
Monique is most recently known for her beautiful
collaborations on the likes of Sir Piers ‘Don’t You
Love Me’ for Curious Records and Blue 6’s ‘Pure’
for the Naked Music label, but for many she is best
known as the amazing voice fronting the New York
Acid Jazz funk driven ensemble Abstract Truth. In
1996 Abstract Truth released OGet Another Plan’ on
WAVE, followed later that year by an EP of remixes
that was released on Wave and also picked up by
Gilles Peterson’s Talkin’ Loud stable. Their follow up
was the smash ‘We Had A Thing’ in 1998 which is
where this story starts.
Matthias will be touring from March through to May,
and Monique will be appearing at some of these
dates to perform Go Getter live, keep your eyes
peeled for details.
