DON GUAPO
DonGuapo comes to the Bay by way of Los Angeles where he grew up on his father’s
love for jazz and soul, his mother’s passion for rock and classical, and the golden
era of hip hop. Frustrated with the changing landscape of hiphop, Guapo began spinning
and turned to House and Disco thus beginning the birth of his new life in the club within
the realm of dance music. This magnetic DJ soon developed a name for himself around the
tastemakers and dancers in LA bringing a rich taste in rhythms and sounds while playing
tracks that infused the dance floor with a much needed shot of energy. He eventually began
a residency at Therapy, a Hollywood staple, which led to his linking up with West Coast
Legend Marques Wyatt and the DEEP camp. It is here at Therapy he has shared the decks
with Marques, Tony Powell, Vikter Duplaix, as well as Andy Caldwell, Miguel Migs and a
host of others. Recently, Guapo moved to the Bay Area to push the envelope of his career
even further. Upon arrival he has shared the decks with Julius Papp, Mark Farina, Bay Area
staple Dedan (Brother’s & Sisters), and the like. Guapo enjoys bringing a wide variety of
genres to the table exposing people to music with integrity and sweat-inducing rhythms and
beats to get the party rocking.AARON BYRD
Aaron Byrd, 24, has the distinct honor of being KCRW’s youngest host, but he learned his DJ
skills from the best of them – the station’s own Garth Trinidad. After paying his dues as a
volunteer at the front desk, Aaron had the opportunity to sit in during Chocolate City
(now Garth Trinidad). As they were leaving the studio one night, Garth told Aaron he had a
great voice and the right taste in music and quickly took him under his wing. Two years
later he brings the KCRW audience Aaron Byrd (formerly called Pangea), a show based on the
idea that we were all once part of the same land mass and that music is the way to break
down the barriers and social constructs we have built.“Art is a unifying force and music is the best medium to make that connection,†said Byrd.
“Music can break down borders – be it based on geography, gender or class. You go to a concert
and you see people of ages, races and backgrounds and I’ve always thought of it as the one thing
that unites us all.â€Aaron’s music tastes have always been very eclectic and expansive and he has always had a “DJ mentalityâ€
of searching for music. His version of Pangea will focus on world music, but not by the definition most
people attach to it.“A lot of the music will be fusions of several genres from different locales. For example, trip hop
from Argentina. By most people’s accounts trip hop began in Austria, but Argentine DJs throw in a tango
influence and I want to share that unique sound with a wider audience.â€Byrd is a native Angeleno, born in Inglewood and carrying a degree in Environmental Science from UCLA.
DJ KERRY
DJ KERRY has been passionate about music ever since she can remember.
Her musical beginnings began with her playing the piano at age 8 and
listening to hard rock until she was introduced to Michael Jackson at
age 12. Once soulful music entered her life she expanded her musical
genres to everything from R&B, Disco, Rap, Hip-Hop, House and
everything in between. Out of all the genres, house music and disco
classics/edits are her favorite to spin.DJ KERRY is known for playing very soulful house that includes vocal,
tribal, and deep house. Many of her influences come from DJs such as
Louie Vega, Marques Wyatt, Joe Claussell, DJ Harvey, Greg Wilson and
David Mancuso to name a few.One thing that KERRY brings to her sets is the sense of universal appeal.
Her song selections are often not condensed to one type of sound but an
accumulation of everything from Brazilian jazz to Latin grooves to afro
beats to electronic grooves inbetween. Her sense of style is very smooth
and seamless. You can always count on DJ KERRY to make you groove. For the past 5 years Kerry had been DJing all over Los Angeles and feels
honored that she has had the opportunity to open for such artists as
Macy Gray, Quest Love of The Roots, Groove Junkies, & Scott K.
