Attention House Music Intellects,
This week I will feature mixes by some of Chicago’s own, Bad Boy
Bill, DJ. JM3 & The one and only Derrick Carter.
Bad Boy Bill got his start DJing as a teenager, Joining Hot Mix
Five on the legendary WBMX in Chicago. He also mixed at DJ battles.
Only a senior in High School, Bad Boy Bill started his own record
label. He eventually became a household name as a DJ on Chicago’s
B96 radio station. Today Bill spends most of his time producing tunes
in the studio or out on the road, Playing in places like Chicago, New
York & Germany, just to name a few.
His old school house mix featured on this week’s show will surely get
you reminiscing!!!
DJJM3 had a musical background with knowledge of the
clarinet, baritone, tuba, and sousaphone (notice the extensive bass
knowledge). While attending Luther High School South in Chicago, he
played those instruments in Concert Band. A music teacher took
notice of his creativity and requested that JM3 get involved with the
Jazz class. He declined, because of his growing interest with DJing.
After listening to the hot mixes on WBMX (at that time on 102.7FM),
JM3 immersed himself into the art of mixing and learned the craft. By
June 1984, he had his first set of equipment and begun doing small
parties. In 1991, started doing club one nights at the Warehouse III,
The Cairo, and The Riverfront Dance Factory (now Safyre).
JM3 signed with Steve “Silk†Hurley’s company- http://
http://www.SilkMix.com where he helps out with the “Old School/New
School re-mixes†on the Tom Joyner Morning Show. From 1996-1998
JM3 also did house mixes on a show I had on Saint Xavier
University’s WXAV Radio in Chicago.
His Smooth Disco mix featured on this week’s show is on point!
Born and raised in the western suburbs, Derrick Carter was
into music from a young age, but during his teens Chicago’s house
scene sucked him in for good. Before long Carter became a strong
presence in the city’s underground dance scene. “When I got my
driver’s license at 16 my sneak ability was validated,” he laughs. “I
was a fierce bedroom jock for a long time. After you mix for the love
of it for six or seven years, you get it pretty tight and you can take it
on the road.” He got by working at dance-music specialty stores like
Gramaphone and gigging at parties. Later he landed regular DJ stints
at Shelter, Foxy’s, and Smart Bar. Though he doesn’t spin much
locally anymore, when he does he attracts large crowds. His sets are
rooted in house, but he freely travels outside club tastes, seamlessly
incorporating old-school disco, soul, jazz, and whatever else catches
his fancy. Most of the time he works in Europe, where he’s become a
minor celebrity among dance-music aficionados. Carter says that due
to his growing notoriety his production talents have been requested
by pop-oriented acts. But he prefers to remain underground.
Although enthused about his own Blue Cucaracha label and a new
UK-based imprint he runs called Classic, he’s reluctant to offer much
explanation of either label’s MO–other than each releases records
when the mood strikes him. “I like to keep myself pretty invisible.
You may think I’m somewhere, but I’ve already left.”
This Hard hittin’ Mix featured on this week’s show kept me moving,
Damn this Boy is Hot!!!!!!
Don’t Miss this week show!!!! It will keep you dancin’ and loving
House Music. Peace!!!!!!!!!
