The Sunburst Band
‘Until The End Of Time’ Album
Z Records
Zedd CD 006
UK electronic pioneer DJ Dave Lee aka Joey Negro
regroups with his supa-talented muso mates to
reform London’s magical nu-funk and boogie hybrid,
The Sunburst Band, to unleash their magical second
album ‘Until The End Of Time’ on Dave’s own label Z
Records. With members culled from the funkiest
ends of Incognito, Jamiroquai and the Kyoto Jazz
Massive. The Sunburst Band is unashamedly
musical and amid a dance music scene that’s
witnessing people shying away from the worst
minimalist monotonous club plod, they serve up a
sparkling antidote riddled with all the funkier genres
ranging from 80’s boogie, Disco, Jazz Fusion, Go Go
as well as some lurvely down tempo tunes. As you’d
expect from a band used to working only with the
best and wearing their solid funk stripes with pride,
the toweringly afro-ed frontman Pete Simpson is
joined on the album by the original Chic gals Norma
Jean and Lucy Martin among others. Hold tight as
The Sunburst Band crank up the boogie factor for
2004!
“The boogie Assassin is back to kill again, no filtered
2 bar rubbish here, just pure live Disco, Boogie,
Funk, Soul and Jazz- inspired numbers all funked
up with a modern flourish – with lush
instrumentation and the highest production
standards too, quite, quite better than most of those
in my collection†– Dimitri From Paris
The Sunburst Band aka Tony Remy (Guitar); Julian
Crampton (Bass); Pete Simpson (Vocals); Dave Lee
(Keys, programming and production) Thomas Dyani
(Percussion/ Drums) originally got together in 1999
when they released their first album, the funk-flecked
‘Here Comes the Sunburst Band’ to widespread
critical acclaim. It featured the smash singles
‘Atlantic Forrest’, ‘Ease Your Mind’ and the worldwide
anthem ‘Garden Of Love’ which was licensed
everywhere from Dimitri’s Playboy Mansion,
Clubbers Guide to Ibiza, Mad Styles and Crazy
Visions (Louie Vega) to Hed Kandi and also
championed by the likes of Timmy Regisford, Louie
Vega/ MAW, Miguel Migs, Pete Tong, Oliver Lieb,
Tony Humphries and David Morales to name but a
few.
Aside from his phenomenal DJ sets worldwide, as a
producer, Dave Lee is one of the few people who
can glide effortlessly from the chilly depths of the
underground to the moneyfied glitz of commercial
music, while keeping both his dignity and his
wide-ranging fan-base intact. Having moved on
recently from the cool ad-friendly, chill-out throb of
his Jakatta moniker, Dave has embarked upon a
series of production projects, along with The
Sunburst Band he has been developing and
producing new electro-rockers The Like Me’s due to
release their first album at the end of this year.
This incredible musical journey kicks off with the tres
hedonistic funky disco groove ‘We Will Turn You On’
featuring the stunning voices of Chic’s Norma Jean
& Lucy Martin, giving way to the jazz fused disco
outing ‘Until The End Of Time’, brazen with classy
brass and a fabulous percussion solo. ‘Twinkle’ is a
laid back funksome gem sporting the impeccable
soulful voice of Linda Clifford, laid over a bed of
delicious keys and gentle percussive undercurrents
followed by the punchy street groove ‘SB Rock The
Go Go’ that comes packed with light funky guitars
and sexy sax. The easy downtempo jazz fused licks
married with the sublime spoken message of ‘Love
Trouble’ provide the perfect chill before exploding
into the discotastic slice of uplifting dance heaven,
‘Fly Away’, dynamically arranged and posed with
classy brass stabs, funky guitar riffs, warm rhodes
keys and a funky ass bass groove, complemented
by Pete’s outstanding vocal. ‘Fly Away Part 2’ creates
an alternative vibe with its mean slow jam
encompassing laid back echoes of part 1.
As the journey progresses the funk fuelled flavour of
‘Far Beyond’ is beautiful with dreamy haunting keys
that drift through the track giving the listener the
perfect soundtrack to drift away to those far away
places. ‘Just Do It’ , just does it! Firing on every disco
cylinder, this is an electrifying dancefloor smasher
vocalised by Norma Jean & Lucy Martin. Eighties
inspired grooves are also ripe for the picking with
‘Thin Air’s instrumental outing ladened with cowbells
and gripping synthscapes and the smooth soul affair
‘Everyday’. Changing the mood, ‘He Is’ is a touching
slice of kitsch with a pretty retro musical platform of
which girls and boys vocalise their ideas of what god
is. Closing the party, its time to stretch and relax to
the dreamy tones of ‘Strollin’, luscious with pretty
vocal stabs combined with washes of blissed out
keys gliding over downtempo beats.
The full Sunburst Band experience will be hitting the
road in late Spring with a seven strong band line-up.
Expect to see lead vocalist Pete’s mesmerising
effect on the laydees dirtied up by Dave Lee’s sexy
electronic programming. As Dave Lee says, “It’ll be
nice to get out after spending so many months
locked in the studio with myself and other bands.â€
